Glass Recycling is Back – and It’s Beautiful

After years out of action, the island’s only glass crushing machine is finally back up and running, thanks to Flowers Group, who’ve taken ownership and given it a new lease on life.

The machine had been sitting idle for years, but a couple of months ago it was brought back online. Now, crushed glass is being repurposed into beautiful, sustainable pavers, giving old bottles and jars a brand-new life underfoot. This method not only diverts glass from landfills but also offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paving materials.

Recycling is open to everyone. Locals can participate in this recycling effort by dropping off their clean glass waste (without lids) at the designated collection point located in the Carnation Inn parking area. This convenient drop-off location is open to the general public, encouraging community involvement in sustainable waste management practices.

From there, the glass will be processed right here on-island, cutting down waste and keeping things circular. The restoration of the glass crushing machine and the subsequent recycling initiative by Flowers Group mark a significant step forward in the island’s environmental stewardship. By embracing innovative recycling methods and encouraging public participation, the island sets a commendable example of how communities can work together to transform waste into valuable resources.

It’s a smart, stylish step toward greener living, and it’s only just getting started.
